MCW Homecoming festivities this week
SHERBURN — This is Homecoming week at Martin County West Schools and the activities are numerous. The Homecoming Court was named last week with Addison Wohlhuter, Courtney Anderson, Madison Lyon, Michael McCorkell, Kain Grandgenett, Tyler Poppe, Emily Schettler, Brycen Kettener, Torrey Paplow and Austin Newcombe selected as the Homecoming Court. There will be a pepfest at 2 p.m. after the parade at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26, and a King and Queen will be crowned then. The Homecoming football game will be at 7 p.m. vs GFW at Trimont Field. The cross country team will have the traditional Ball Run In before the game. The senior class will have a tailgate grill out from 4:30 p.m. to the halftime of the game. They will sell a pork patty or brat with chips, cookie and beverage for $10. The proceeds will help with their senior trip expenses. The traditional Chili feed will be done at a Basketball game due to the homecoming game being at Trimont field this year. The senior class hopes to see fans of MCW at the tailgate grill out and the chili feed later. Friday is Spirit Day. Sherburn and Trimont will be filled with students wearing black, blue and white. The athletes at Martin County West are busy with a volleyball game vs Cleveland on Sept 25 in Trimont. Volleyball also is planning a Cancer Ribbon Night Oct. 2 at Trimont. Tomorrow the Cross Country will be at the golf course in Janesville vs WEM at 4:30 p.m. Homecoming game at 7 p.m. at Trimont for the Football Team vs GFW.

Tuesday Coffee Hours will be from 8:30 to 10 a.m. each Tuesday in September at the St. Paul’s Community Church in Welcome on Dugan St. Join friends and neighbors for great fellowship with a cup of coffee and treats. The October Coffee Hours will be at the Sinn Family Celebration of Life Center in Sherburn.
The Trimont Farmers’ Market will be from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. today, Sept. 24. Check out the activities and fresh produce and handiwork for sale.
The American Red Cross blood drives will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 29 at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont, from 1 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 6 at the Sinn Family Celebration of Life Center in Trimont, Oct. 8 at Truman Public Schools, Oct. 28 at the Truman Community Center, from 1 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 13 at the St. Paul’s Community Church in Welcome, Oct. 20 at Martin Luther High School and Oct. 24 at the American Legion Hall in Fairmont. Give blood if you are eligible. There is an urgent need for blood now.
Congratulations to the Community Options and Resources company (COR), that serves the developmentally disabled adults in the area, on their 50th Anniversary. They are planning an open house from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Fox Lake Event Center near Sherburn at 730 125th street on Sept. 29. COR has group homes in Sherburn and Fairmont. Thank you to the caregiver staff from the houses for many years of care for their clients.
The Sherburn Legion will have Pancake Feeds to raise funds for the plumbing expenses they incurred lately On Sept. 28 and Oct. 2. They will serve pancakes, sausage and eggs from 8 a.m. to noon each of those days for a free-will donation. The Vikings football team will be playing in Dublin and London those Sundays at 8:30 a.m. our time. Good food, good game and a worthy cause all on the same days.
Upcoming events include:
A Pregnancy and Infant Loss Community event will be at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 3 at the Regional Worship Center in Sherburn (south of Interstate 90) for anyone who has lost a child with stillbirth or miscarriage. They will have a night of honoring the child and supporting the parents. Speakers and a booth from Options Pregnancy Center will be available. This is open to the public.
The last day to order coffee beans, tea, chai, cocoa and k-cups from the youth group from St. John’s Lutheran Church is Oct. 3. St. John’s Church also has a Friendship Club that meets for lunch at 11 a.m. on Oct. 6 at the Hometown Restaurant in St. James. Area residents are welcome to join them. Membership at St. John’s is not required.
St. John’s is also having a MAD, Make A Difference, Day from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. on Oct. 19. All ages are encouraged to gather for treats, fellowship and service projects.
