In Sherburn, council looks at library roof
SHERBURN — During the Sherburn City Council meeting on Monday evening, the library building was discussed as the roof is in need of repair. A quote of $46,000 was reported by Clerk Andrea Ballard.
The council asked about patching the roof for now and how much that may cost if it could be done. One company said they could not see the top of the roof since they had no equipment to get up that high. They asked if there was inside access to the top through the library. The Contract with Martin County Libraries stipulates a six-month period if the library is closed and a 90-day period if it is relocated. There was a suggestion to move it to the Senior Center near the City Hall. There has been considerable water damage. Ballard will check on quotes suggested by the council.
The tax forfeiture on properties was discussed, and Ballard explained the procedure before a county sale would be issued. There are several dilapidated properties that have tax and mowing assessments pending. The county will set a sale date which is usually six months from the forfeiture date. The city would not pay taxes if the property were to be used by the city but if public use then there would be taxes assessed and paid. The city can opt to ask for less on sale since the property is falling down and demolition would be expensive. No action was taken at the meeting.
The information about Randy King, building inspection and official, was reviewed by the council with several questions. The current building inspector is retiring. The MN Building Code is followed by the city and the King Company. The company would charge 80 percent of the building permit amount. The city just approved doubling the permit amount if anyone starts building without a permit. The council asked Ballard to advertise for a building inspector/official.
Ballard’s Clerk report mentioned the safety audit coming up, the paid leave and the fire truck loan. The mayor would have to sign for the loan. The total amount for the truck was $400,000-plus. The loan could be paid in one sum or quarterly amounts. The city attorney and the loan company will meet. The council asked that the pictures of the check and pictures of the fire truck be readied so that loan procedure can be advanced as soon as possible.
