MCW Board hears building project updates
SHERBURN — During the Martin County West (MCW) School Board meeting on Monday evening, Superintendent Cori Reynolds reported projected enrollment and finances. The Building Project is underway with the beginning of new construction. Construction bills of $59,008 were approved for payment.
Reports from the principals began with MCW Principal Autumn Welcome. There were some staffing updates and a special staffing crunch with science classes. After trying to find solutions the only thing that would work was to have a science teacher from Butterfield-Odin school teach part-time at MCW. This necessitated changes in classes and locations. The four classes will be trimmed to two and the other class will be combined and in the cafeteria. Welcome and teachers will help by supervising the classes as the need arises. There will be an orientation for new students and an open house for all students from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 27. Welcome listed the College in the Schools (CIS) courses available.
Trimont Elementary Principal Michelle Baker reported a school secretary was hired. Registration is ongoing, and Title One services and interventions were listed. MCA tests data and FastBridge data will be used to assess intervention need. The World’s Finest Chocolate Bar fundraisers will be held from Sept. 22 to Oct. 3 for student activities funds for field trips, classroom activities, speakers, awards and more. Purchase of a whole box from a company is encouraged to pass out to their employees.
The report from Sherburn Elementary Principal Nickole Bowie mentioned the ongoing registration and Title One services. Teacher and class lists are ongoing. Conferences are planned. She mentioned preschool beginning to look for advisory committee members and ideas of classes to offer. Offerings include Mini-Magic Gymnastics, football, Spanish, wrestling, 55 driving classes, guitar lessons, technology and more.
The first day of school is scheduled for Sept. 2 for grades 7 to 12 and on Sept. 4 all students in grades kindergarten to 6 will have classes. Homecoming is planned for Sept. 22 to Sept. 26 with a change in location for the football game on Friday night.
