MCW plans for upcoming year
SHERBURN — On Monday during the Martin County West (MCW) School Board meeting, Superintendent Cori Reynolds reported the new plat map has been recorded. The bidding for construction is opening Aug. 14, and the purchase of the Welcome School property has been signed. The Surety Bond is now being worked on by the insurance company.
The ECFE and preschool will combine as one teaching position, and all classrooms will be in Sherburn with transportation available. The gymnastics lease of the Fairmont Armory is in process, and a move is anticipated by Aug. 31 from LiveFit in Fairmont.
A question about soccer cooperating with Fairmont was answered by the Athletic Director. He will check on the progress or denial from Fairmont. There was a comment that it may bump up the class level, but the board did not think it would raise the class level since there weren’t that many students involved.
Reynolds reported that three pet adoptions were facilitated through Martin County Humane Society because of a donation from the fourth-grade lemonade fundraiser.
Finally, Reynolds reported finances as $10,975,463 for the 2024-2025 school year. Enrollment will be online only and begin Aug. 1. Preschool enrollment is happening now.
In other news, some bids for the 2025-2026 school year for milk, fuel and snow removal were approved (milk-Prairie Farms, snow removal- Tom Finke at Sherburn and Jon Holtz at Trimont, fuel-NuWay and K&H was tabled until the next meeting). The meet and confer and the district advisory committee meeting schedules were approved as the same as last year.
The school board stipend, fee schedule and substitute rates were approved.
Tenure was approved for several teachers and the social worker (English Teacher Summer Firchau, Sixth Grade Teacher Courtney Fritz, Art Teacher Helena Johnson, Second Grade Teacher Maia Ringnell, Special Education Teacher Chelsea Rolling and Fifth Grade Teacher Jon Traetow).
The board approved the salary freeze for Superintendent Reynolds and a bid from Evenson Concrete, which had been tabled from the meeting on July 8. That meeting approved various bids for construction and tabled those bids that were asked for a rebid or that were bid from nonqualified bidders.
In miscellaneous business, the school board:
— Approved the following donations: $341 from Donor’s Choice for CER Flag Football equipment; $4,155 from 3M for math graphing; and $968.81 from TDS Grant for Makerspace at Sherburn Elem. Library.
— Approved the employment of Preschool ESP Elizabeth Hoefs and High School ESP Stephanie Earhardt.
— Approved the resignation of Preschool Teacher Heather Leiding.
The MCW School Board’s next meeting will be at 6 p.m. on Aug. 18, at the Sherburn Elementary School.
