Sherburn City Council talks repairs
SHERBURN — The Sherburn City Council met on Monday evening. The clerk’s report included information from Garland construction about the roof of City Hall.
There are several failure points that should be repaired. Seams and membrane shrinkage were some of them. He recommended an entire roof replacement in one to five years. He could repair the failures so that the water would not pool on the roof and leak for $300 right away. The replacement of the membrane would be $2,000. Clerk Andrea Ballard suggested putting that repair on the budget and getting the immediate repairs now. The council approved the immediate repairs.
The repair of the Sherburn Library ceiling and roof was discussed with the Garland company since the library had leaks after the large amount of rain recently. At a previous meeting, the council asked for a second quote and when the clerk got one, that company wanted the city to pay for a boom and lift needed, however, the League of Minnesota Cities recommended not paying that. The council tabled that repair for now since the leak is through the apartment above the library too.
The quote from Beemer for hydrant installation was discussed. Ballard reported the company had been notified several times since June and has not installed the hydrants. A quote was requested since the hydrants are in stock in the city. The quote was for $ 16,000. The council asked that the company be notified again and requested to do the work ASAP so there will not be a problem in the meantime in case of a fire.
Police Chief Trevor Yochim reported the June calls and answered questions from the council about non-emergency calls to him when he is not in the office or in his car. The squad cell is in his car, and any emergency calls get routed to Fairmont if he is not available. The email and other information are available on the police website.
In other business:
— A donation of $3,000 was given by an anonymous giver for help with the repair/replacement of park equipment, especially for South Park.
— A spigot for water on a vacant property on Delana Street was discussed by the council since a realtor asked if the water could be used by a person interested in purchasing the property.
— The council suggested that a meter be installed and a flat rate charged for water at $59+ for up to 1,000 gallons. A new meter is installed free. A second meter is charged $425. The council was concerned about the potential use of the property.
— Temperance Lake Ridge requested some lines painted, but the paint truck is not available due to mechanical difficulties. The Joint Powers of the Sherburn, Welcome and Trimont cities will meet on July 23 to discuss that problem. TLR had a problem with coding the finances, and the city cannot put them on their coding so TLR will contact the auditor for that.
— A problem with an abandoned building being uninhabitable for years and the owner not responding to several letters was discussed, and the council approved declaring it a public nuisance and turning over the issue to the City Attorney. They discussed some other abandoned properties.
— The Chevy Truck from the City was declared excess property and put up for sale. When it would not start, it was sold to Borntragger for $350.
— The evaluation of the clerk was discussed since the date of hire was in question, since she was originally hired as a deputy clerk and then moved to clerk after the clerk had moved.
— A question about some properties was referred to the building inspector and building permits employee, whose contact information is on the website.
— The Council met with the EDA committee after the meeting.
The next meeting of the Sherburn City Council will be at 5 p.m. on Aug. 4 at the City Hall.
