School board approves special election

FAIRMONT – As the next step in its school improvement journey, the Fairmont School Board approved a special election for $21.7 million in a building bond referendum at its meeting Tuesday.

The election will be taking place Nov. 4, on the same day as the general election for Minnesota U.S. and State Representatives and Senators. Board Member Michael Edman said he wanted to clarify that it is only a special election in name, and not happening at a separate election from the general.

Director of Finance and Business Management Jessica Korte said it is a special election in the sense at this time the consensus is that they have to pay for it.

“If there’s other municipalities or precincts that are running election on that same time, then the County Auditor-Treasurer would handle it,” she said. “Because at this time we don’t know. We believe that we would run everything.”

In a press release, Traetow said the proposed plan up for vote includes building a fine arts learning center addition and a new secured entrance and office area on the high school, as well as replacing underfloor sewer pipe and putting windows in several classrooms. This is in addition to more general exterior and interior repairs at both school buildings.

“The referendum would be funded through a property tax increase if voters approve the plan,” Traetow said in the release. “For a $200,000 residential home in the district, the tax impact is approximately $7 per month starting in 2026.”

For an agricultural homestead with an estimated $5,000 market value per acre, it would cost around 38 cents per acre per year. Before the election, an online parcel-specific calculator will be provided so voters can see what the impact would be on them.

In the release, School Board Director Nicole Green said they take pride in Fairmont’s schools and recognize the immense support received by the community over the years.

“We have consciously brought forward a plan that respects and recognizes the need to maintain those previous investments while also trying to adequately position the Fairmont Area School system for its future,” she said.
