Ceylon discusses junk car removal
CEYLON — The Ceylon City Council met on Tuesday evening. A discussion about the unlicensed, junk cars in the city was held. All agreed they need to be removed. There was a question about whether police needed a vip or identification number to give the owner a citation. Mayor Judith Perkins will check on that. The council will make a list of the cars they would like removed. Perkins asked about the insurance company for the city, and will ask a representative to check on the equipment at the park for children. There was a question as to the repair/replacement of the equipment if it is not safe.
Emerald Ash Borer was also discussed. The City Works employee mentioned that two trees near the shelter house in Mondale Park should be treated. The cost would be about $200 every other year. There are other ash trees affected in the city. There could be from 20 to 50. They will be looked at in the future.
Plants for the hangers are ready, and the clamps for the banner brackets are in the works. The City Works hoped to get the city decorated for the All Class reunion and the 125th anniversary of the founding of the city this summer.
The contracts to fix the water situation, where some have connections that are not to the main water line, were discussed. Councilor Walter, the Clerk, and the City Works employee will list the duties and take them to the lawyer to make a contract.
In other business:
— The council had the first reading of the list of rural residents who applied for the Rural Service District ordinance. The hearing will be at the July 8 Council meeting. Rural residents who have land in the city limits but are not using the utilities (sewer, water, electricity) have a lower agricultural rate for taxes, which is 25 percent.
— The council approved three building permits for garages and decks that applied.
— The council approved the bid from Pearson Bros. company to do sealcoating on the north part of town this summer.
— The council discussed the need for hiring a new City Utility Worker since Jim Plumhoff plans to retire soon. They read the advertisement and approved its publication for two weeks in The Sentinel, Photo Press and the Minnesota Works and City websites. Applications should be given to the City Hall by July 15. The job description and applications are at the City Hall. Applicants should have a water and wastewater license.
The next meeting of the Ceylon City Council will be at 6 p.m. on July 8 at City Hall.
