Sherburn Council looks into policies

SHERBURN — The Sherburn City Council met on Monday evening and approved both the Sanitary Sewer Maintenance Policy after discussion and the Sanitary Sewer Emergency Response Policy. Clerk Andrea Ballard explained that most of the provisions in the policies were already used by the public works employees.

A Public Education part was added that would be used when residents ask questions or when the public is reminded not to flush non-biodegradable products, even if the product says it’s flushable. She will be working on a water shut-off policy. The emergency policy is for when a resident or the public works department has a water emergency, and what would be the appropriate response. She suggested setting aside some money to replace the electric pump and the grinder, which grinds up solid matter at the lift station. The public works tried to repair the needed equipment, but it will not last. She will report the quotes for the equipment to the council.

The council reports inquired about reconciliation reports that have not been made, and suggested that work was more important than the updates on policies.

The payroll report was given at that meeting, and Ballard reminded the council that there are some overtime hours and some on-call hours not on regular hours reported. The council asked for a schedule of when they would tour the water plant, sewer plant, etc. Ballard will work out a schedule.

Deputy Clerk Sean Devenn and Ballard reported the water bills last month and why they were not correct (replacing meters and meters not transferring to the other meter correctly). This month’s water bills are on target. The council asked how the estimation of water was going, and Ballard reported that most people just used the water use they did last year. Some were okay, and some were not.

Some residents asked about the second meter, so they do not pay sewer fees for water used on lawns, etc., that does not go in the sewer. There have been some requests for an adjustment. That depends on what the cause was for the larger amount of water used.

The council went into closed session about a purchase.

The next meeting of the Sherburn City Council will be at 5 p.m. on June 16 at the City Hall.

Starting at $2.99/week.
