School Board will open findings up to public
FAIRMONT – Fairmont Area Schools Superintendent Andy Traetow announced an upcoming event to get the public in on some information during Tuesday’s School Board Meeting.
The event, to be held at the next school board meeting on from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on June 10, will show the public what conclusions the Fairmont School Board has reached regarding its facility assessment process.
Traetow said the event comes as the planning phase of the facility assessment is nearing its end.
“I’d like to thank our staff, you as board members, and everyone for all their work and input during the process,” he said. “Know that we work diligently to identify, quantify and ultimately prioritize all the needs of our facilities through many meetings and collaborations with our ICS partners.”
Traetow said he’s confident they are arriving at a plan of solutions to address the most pressing facility needs while remaining fiscally responsible for the school district. The details of these plans will be front and center for the open house.
“We’ll be sharing some details about our facilities plan, as well as some preliminary details with project scopes, timing, costs, all things included in a potential project,” Traetow said.
For those unable to attend, Traetow said there will be many opportunities to learn about proposed facility improvements over the next few months as board meetings and the facility assessment process continues.
Board Member Nicole Green said she is very glad to have this opportunity for the community.
“I encourage the community to come to that open house,” she said. “To see all of the research that’s been done and the studies that have been done for our facilities, and also to provide input.”
Board Member Dan Brookens noted the different ages of the buildings and wings and how they’re taking that into account.
“All of our facilities going from our oldest building, the three through six wing here at Fairmont Elementary, to our newest tech addition that we did a few years ago,” he said. “To make sure these are all working together optimally over the next stretch of years, that we can continue to maintain and grow our enrollment, our programs, and our opportunities, and keep Fairmont the special place it is.”
In other news:
— The board approved a change in the graduation requirements starting next year to make personal finance credit necessary and remove a required elective credit. This follows the state ruling that a personal finance class be added as a graduation requirement. Personal finance was already taught at Fairmont, and the only change is that it shifts from an elective class to a required one.
— It was the last Tuesday board meeting for Student Representatives Alayna Haefner and Grace Simpson, who are graduating. On behalf of both, Simpson thanked the board for the opportunity.
“Thank you all for creating such a safe space for us to share our ideas and being so welcoming to a fresh eye and perspective,” she said.
Traetow congratulated the girls on their graduation.
“Both of you have had a multitude of successes in a lot of different ways in your school system,” he said. “Even as graduates, if you look back and think of things you think we could improve upon, we’re always open to hearing that.”
