FAIRMONT – Part of a statewide sweep, Fairmont’s Walmart is undergoing a remodel.

They are a part of 22 Walmarts being worked on this year, including ones in New Ulm, Worthington and Redwood Falls. In the last five years, $195 million has already been spent on Minnesota Walmart remodels.

Walmart has been in Fairmont since the mid 2000s and the store here has another significant remodel project in 2015.

This time around, updates are projected to be throughout the store. A new look will include new, larger signage. Displays will be erected for areas like the home and baby departments. All departments are seeing expansion as a whole, with new items to be added.

The largest piece of the remodel will be the online pickup and delivery section. The physical presence of online pickup and delivery will increase, with construction taking place on-site.

The pharmacy will also be getting a facelift, with wider aisles, privacy checkout areas and a new room for private screenings.

Walmart CEO Kieran Shanahan said Walmart stores serve local communities, and they want to enable people to shop how they want to.

“The customers that shop them and the associates that work there all live in those communities,” he said. “We want to make sure our stores reflect the community they serve, but also make sure our stores are up to date, that they offer the best of what Walmart has to offer.”

Fairmont Area Chamber of Commerce President Kandi Menne said they are looking forward to seeing the project’s impacts when it is completed.

“The remodel of our local Walmart marks the beginning of an exciting transformation, enhancing both the in-store shopping experience and overall accessibility,” she said. “With improvements planned for the store interior and the parking lot, this project reflects a strong commitment to better serving our community.”

Currently, there are no plans for the store to close during the remodel process as construction will happen after hours. It began earlier in April and will be finished sometime in August.

More information, such as the cost of the remodel, was not made available before publication.

Starting at $2.99/week.
