Fairmont schools reflects on start of year
FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Area School Board on Tuesday reflected on summer programs and projects, as well as peered into future projects and agendas.
Community of Education and Recreation (CER) Director Stephanie Busiahn presented a CER update to the board. Busiahn reflected on previous summer CER programs as every event has completely wrapped up. Programs included 11 adult programs and more than 30 programs for children. There were more than 200 adults enrolled in adult programs and more than 1,000 children enrolled in children’s programs. Because of the generosity of an anonymous donations, fees for the programs were significantly cut and made more accessible to the community. Busiahn noted on the progress of the Cardinal Prime after-school enrichment program that began in September when school began. Currently, there are approximately 31 children currently enrolled in the program, with the program having enough space to hold a capacity of 60 or more children.
After Busiahn’s report, Board Member Mike Edman chimed in regarding ideas of how to make the Cardinal Prime opportunity more accessible for parents who submitted their enrollment fees on late notice, or especially certain families in economic distress who are intrigued by the program. Busiahn reminded the School Board that Cardinal Prime is in its second year of implementation and that they’re still thinking of strategies to make Cardinal Prime accessible for families in different circumstances.
After the conclusion of the CER update, Superintendent Andy Traetow delivered his report. Traetow noted that student enrollment for both the Fairmont Area high school and elementary has remained constant in comparison to the previous year.
“Trending is almost identical, and enrollment is very consistent,” Traetow said.
The board officially recognized its new board member, high school student Haefner, and invited her to introduce herself after the superintendent report. Haefner told the board that she is a senior in high school, and shared about the extracurriculars she is involved, and where she is employed. The School Board offered Haefner a warm welcome.
