Heritage Acres goes back in time

FAIRMONT — Heritage Acres of Fairmont will offer an event for the community that travels back to farming techniques in the 1900s. Threshing Day will go from 10 am to 4 pm, Sunday, August 11.

Heritage Acres is a museum and agricultural interpretative center, with buildings that replicate 20th-century farmland. It invites members of the community to immerse themselves in the farming culture in Minnesota while remaining entertained with special events hosted on the grounds.

This year is the 49th year of Heritage Acres hosting Threshing Day. The event is free of charge and offers demonstrations of old-fashioned farming, oat-thrashing methods, horse-operated rides, vendors, live music, pedal pulling, food and several more attractions to keep the whole family engaged for the day.

Jerry Simon, the Heritage Acres event organizer and president, stated that Threshing Day aims to inform the community and relive history, as how ancestors in Minnesota performed farming tasks and duties.

The event is planned a year one year ahead of the occasion, with each member of the planning committee seizing a different role to make sure the event is ready for the community.

“We look for people who want to participate,” said Simon.

In addition, the Heritage Acres planning committee receives grants for additional attractions and demonstrations, and locals pay for the petting zoo that will be available on the day of the event. Along with the thrashing oats demonstration, other demonstrations include wooden spoons, spinning yarn and more. Simon hopes that if more people become involved with the event, more attractions regarding farming history will be on display. Typically the event sees approximately 300 attendees.

Following this event, in the fall Heritage Acres will host harvest events during the corn and bean harvest season. Free-will donations are graciously accepted by Heritage Acres to support the events that are held on the land.
