MCW vote for new school passes

SHERBURN– In a special election on Tuesday, a question asking voters in the Martin County West School District to support a $64.7 million bond referendum which would allow for the construction of a new school building in Sherburn to house all students grades K-12 passed by a slim margin of 65 votes.

However, a second question, asking voters to support an additional $2.04 million for the addition of an auxiliary gym failed.

This was the second special election on the matter for the school district after it failed by abut 65 votes in November of 2023.

MCW school superintendent, Cori Reynolds, said, “no matter how anyone voted, we’re all still Mavericks. The work before us to realize our vision of being connected to the past, celebrate the present and cultivate the future will include everyone, even those who didn’t want this.”

The issue had strong supporters and advocators on both sides of the vote.

Next up, a committee will be formed to work with the architects on a plan to design a building.
