Band concert tonight at high school

SHERBURN — There will be a Lunch & Learn program beginning 11 a.m. today, May 15, at First

Lutheran Church in Trimont, followed by a light lunch. These programs are free to anyone in Martin County. They appreciate a free will donation for the lunch.

There will be a ‘Hamburger Night’ from 6-8 p.m. tonight, May 15, at the Sherburn Legion Hall. $10 will get you a burger, salad and baked beans. Nice supper out.

American Red Cross blood drives will be held 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, May 20, at St. Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont. There will be a band concert for grades 5-12 beginning 7 p.m. tonight, May 15, at the high school in Sherburn. Plan to attend.

Mayo Mobile Clinic is in Sherburn from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, May 20 and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m Wednesday, May 22, near Sherburn City Hall. Call the appointment line at (507) 238-8500 and

mention Sherburn Clinic.

Sherburn City Council will meet 5 p.m. Monday, May 20, at the city hall in Sherburn. There is always a time at the beginning of each meeting for public comments and questions without reservations. To be on the regular agenda, please contact the city hall prior to the meeting date at (507) 764-4491.

Ruby’s Pantry grocery distribution will be 5:30-7 p.m. Monday, May 20, at the Regional Worship Center just south of I-90 in Sherburn. Please watch for MnDOT signs as to accessibility to the church’s parking lot. If you have extra empty boxes bring them along and give them to the volunteers for the next distribution. There are no income or residential guidelines. A charge of $25 gets you a trunkful of groceries. Watch Facebook for a partial list of what is to be distributed the weekend before.

Tuesday coffee hours for May continue from 8:30-10 a.m. May 21, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Welcome. Also, congratulations to Trinity Lutheran Church who will celebrate their 150th

anniversary at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 19, with a joint worship service and a light lunch for Circle of Faith parishes and guests.

Condolences to the families of Barbara Young (Bliesmer), former resident of Dunnell, and Shirley Skogerboe, long-time resident of Sherburn. Shirley will be remembered as an English teacher in Sherburn School and a daycare provider and staff for Dr. Switras’ office in Fairmont. She was very gracious, cooperative and supportive when I started to write this column for Sherburn News that she wrote for years before. She will be missed.

Sherburn Civic and Commerce Club will be filling the large planters that usually are on Main Street. The planters are in the Sherburn City Park this year due to the highway construction. If anyone would like to help financially to buy flowers for the planters, please send donations to the Sherburn C&C at Box 108, Sherburn, MN 56171. Your name will be placed on a small sign in the planters. The C&C will also sponsor the Sherburn city-wide garage sales on June 6-8. The garage sales list will be available at Kum & Go, Casey’s and Bank Midwest. The fee for listing a garage sale on the map is $10 which is due June 3 at Bank Midwest when your listing should be dropped off there also.

Memorial Day is May 27 and the Avenue of Flags will be put up at 8 a.m. on May 25 and taken down at 5:30 p.m. on May 27. Those willing to help with the flags should show up at the city park at those times. Many hands make easier work for this important job. Plan now to help with the flags. The Memorial Day program is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at Sherburn City Park. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held at the high school in Sherburn.

Martin County West Schools are busy with the last month of school approaching fast. The last day of school is May 30. There are track and field days planned for 5th and 6th graders on May 16 and 3rd and 4th graders on May 17. Check out the school district newsletter for information about Community Education and Recreation (CER) plans after May. Some activities planned are: guitar lessons, theatre performances, baseball, volleyball, football, wrestling and basketball camps. Check out the activities your family may want to join.

MCW athletes are winding down but still busy. on Thursday, May 16, the golf teams will go to

Jackson at 4 p.m., the baseball team will travel to Blue Earth at 4 p.m., while the softball team will be playing at Welcome Field at 4:30 p.m. On Friday, May 17, the golf teams will battle at Alden-Conger at 4:30 p.m., the baseball will play against MVL at 4:30 p.m. at the Welcome Field, and the softball team will be play a conference game at 5 p.m. in Mankato. On Monday, May 20, the golf team will play 4 p.m. at the Fox Lake Golf Course, Sherburn. On Tuesday, May 21, the golf team will play 9 a.m. at Madelia. Good luck, Mavericks.

In upcoming events, St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sherburn is taking registration for Vacation Bible School for 3-year-olds to kindergarten for June 10-14 and for older children at Camp Omega from July 8-12. Register now at the church office email which is hurch@sjlsherburn.com or get further information there. St. John’s is also sponsoring a bus trip to Kentucky to see The Ark Encounter and Creation Museum along with other interesting sites on the way. That trip will be Aug. 18-24, 2024.
