Welcome looks at shelter repairs

WELCOME — The Welcome City Council met on Tuesday evening. The Park Board had a report about the shelter house repairing project. The facia boards need to be replaced by 1×6 boards and then the electrician can begin to add lights, etc. The pipe rails need painting and the shelter house blocks being painted was discussed and tabled. The hand dryers are ordered and some wiring has begun. Some supplies have been delivered. The council approved the payment by the Mayor and Park Board representatives when 100 percent of the work is done by the contractor. The contractor must show proof of liability insurance before work is done. The metal door, dead bolt lock and supplies quotes are being worked on. The Council and Park Board would ideally like the repairs to be made before the Summer Festival weekend.

The Police Chief report included information about fines for 20+ junk ordinance violations and

hoped that most would use Clean Up Day this weekend to help get rid of some of the items. The appliance pick up tags will be available until May 9 at Welcome City Hall. No chemicals or metal items are accepted for Clean Up Day which is for Welcome residents only.

There was a public comment and question from a resident about the 2nd Street road not being patched as was promised to him quite a while ago. The council said the seal coating was on the docket for 2025. He also asked about a house at 505 First Street that has garbage and unusable cars with no registration. The Police Chief explained the citation situation at that property.

In other business the council learned that the trees may be delivered next week and it approved hiring a professional to plant them so that they are done correctly and the grant would not be taken away. The city employee will get quotes from planters. The city trees will be on county roads and right-of-ways, too. The Welcome Bank asked about a tree. The council discussed using some trees on downtown spots.

The council went into closed session to discuss applications for the clerk/treasurer position and interview questions. In other news the council:

— Approved a three-year contract for sanitation pick up from Hometown Co.

— Approved the transfer of funds from general fund to water fund as recommended by the auditor and approved the quote and review from the auditor, Burkhardt and Burkhardt.

— Approved payment for the FireCatt Hose inspection service for the Welcome Fire Department.

— Heard from the clerk who said that the new computer software did not email bills like the old one and that could be added to the software for $25 a month. The council discussed the situation and then approved the payment for the additional software.

— Approved a resolution authorizing preparation of a feasibility report for infrastructure replacement in the city. Storm sewers, sewer and water lines would be included. The council discussed the streets to be done and decided that some may be added now and if not feasible they could be subtracted.

The next meeting of the Welcome City Council is scheduled for 6 p.m. on May 21 at the city hall in Welcome.
