Speech team team crowned Section 2A Champion

FAIRMONT — On Friday, April 12, the Fairmont Speech Team competed at the MSHSL Section 2A Speech Tournament held at JWP High School in Janesville, Minn.

Fairmont was the Section 2A Champion team with 158 points. Loyola was the Section 2A Runner-up with 76 points.

20 Fairmont speakers earned section final medals in their individual categories. Fairmont advances 14 individuals to state speech.

Senior Abi Peyman was the champion in Great Speeches; Junior Dominick Lund-May was the champion in Extemporaneous Speaking; Juniors Grace Simpson and Oliver Thedens were the champions in Duo Interpretation; Junior Kelsey Hunter was the champion in Informative Speaking; Junior Zoey Tasseff was the champion in Creative Expression; Sophomore Bel Lutterman was the champion in Original Oratory; and Freshman Leon Yang was the champion in Humorous Interpretation.

Senior Andrew Haefner took 2nd place in Extemporaneous Speaking; Junior Alayna Haefner took 2nd place in Original Oratory; and Sophomore Thomas Hamlet took 2nd place in Humorous Interpretation.

Senior Sydney Blomster took 3rd place in Informative Speaking; Freshman Clark Hazard took 3rd place in Extemporaneous Speaking; and Freshman Allie Streit took 3rd place in Prose.

The state speech team from Fairmont competes Friday, April 19, at the MSHSL Class A State Speech Tournament at Shakopee High School. The top eight individuals in each speech category earn state medals. The top three teams earn state plaques.

The non-advancing Section finalists from Fairmont were: Senior Isaiah Lockwood who took 4th place in Great Speeches; 7th Grader Sophia Streit took 4th place in Storytelling; Junior Isaac Thomas took 6th place in Humorous Interpretation; Sophomore Dhanvi Patel took 6th place in Dramatic Interpretation; 8th Grader Haily McConnell took 6th place in Poetry; and Freshman Annie Reyelts and 8th Grader Evan Reyelts took 6th place in Duo Interpretation.

The Fairmont Speech Team is coached by Kathleen Walker, Erik Walker and Miles Duffey.
