‘One Life’ showing at theatre this weekend

SHERBURN — Informational meetings abound in Sherburn. Tonight, April 10, the opposition to the MCW referendum, MCW Care, has a meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Trimont school. There are more scheduled for each town in the MCW school district, on April 18 in Sherburn, on May 2 in Welcome and May 9 in Dunnell. MCW School District has an open house from 5-7 p.m. on April 29 at the high school in Sherburn. The referendum election is May 14.

An MnDOT open house will be held Thursday, April 11, at the Sherburn Senior Center near the city hall in Sherburn. The intent of the open house is to inform area residents about the Hwy. 4 project scheduled to be worked on this spring/summer, about the re-surfacing of 25 miles of road from Sherburn to St. James, replacing a bridge and improving the pedestrian accomodations in Trimont and Sherburn.

An American Red Cross blood drive will be held today, April 10 at the Truman School. Blood drives will also be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, April 12, at the American Legion in Fairmont and from 12:30-5:30 p.m. on April 22, at Martin Luther High School in Northrop. The next Sherburn blood drive is scheduled for June 10 at the Regional Worship Center. The Sherburn Legion will have their Steak Fry Night from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, April 13, with ribeye, shrimp or smoked pork chop, salad bar, baked potato and garlic bread for just $20.

The First Congregational Church in Sherburn located at 212 N. Prairie St. will have their annual Three Meat Buffet meal from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, April 14, for a suggested donation of $10. The menu includes Swedish meatballs, turkey and ham. The church is handicap-accessible. Plan to attend.

Ruby’s Pantry grocery distribution will be held 5:30-7 p.m. Monday, April 15, in the parking lot of the Regional Worship Center just south of I-90 in Sherburn. Check out the Facebook post for items to be distributed for $25 for a trunkful.

Tuesday coffee hours for April continue from 8:30-10 a.m. April 16, at the Sinn Family Celebration of Life facility in Trimont. Join friends and neighbors for fellowship with good coffee and some goodies.

The Blue Earth Zone of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) will have their spring mission gathering/rally beginning 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in Blue Earth. Gifts from the Heart collection will be for the Faribault County Food Shelf.

This weekend, April 12-14, the Sherburn Theatre will feature ‘One Life’ based on a true story starring Anthony Hopkins as Nicholas Winton (1909-2015) who organized kindertransports of Jewish children (over 660) from Prague, Czechoslovakia to the United Kingdom (Britain) just before the start of World War II. He later met a lot of them as adults at a television program about his efforts. Show times are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $5.

The Ceylon Community Day auction will be held Saturday, April 13, and city-wide rummage sales in Ceylon will be April 11-13. Also, the huge rummage sale at Martin Luther High School in Northrop is April 11-13.

Martin County West students have several things planned for this week. On Thursday, April 11, the boys and girls golf teams will meet in Madelia at 4:15 p.m. and the baseball and softball teams will meet Heron Lake/Okabena teams at 4:30 p.m. at the Welcome ball fields. On Friday, April 12, the baseball team will meet Mountain Lake at 4:30 p.m. and the softball team will meet Madelia starting 4:30 p.m. at the Welcome field. On Monday, April 15, the National Honor Society will induct 12 new members at their 10:30 a.m. meeting. The softball team meets USC at 4:30 p.m. in Wells and the MCW School Board meets at 6:30 p.m. On Tuesday, April 16, the boys and girls track and field teams will meet Maple River at 4:15 p.m. and the softball teams will compete at 4:30 p.m. vs. St. Clair/Loyola at the Welcome field. A kindergarten round up is planned for April 25 and a preschool open house is planned for April 23 for the Martin County West School District.

Upcoming events include the Sherburn Clean Up Day on May 4 and the Sherburn Holiday Festival on June 15.
