Fairmont Speech wins Mankato Tournament

FAIRMONT — Twenty-four members of the Fairmont Speech Team competed at the Mankato East Speech Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 24, hosted by Mankato East High School.

In team sweepstakes results, Fairmont took 1st place with 117 points; Mankato West took 2nd place with 75 points; and Mounds Park Academy took 3rd place with 55 points.

For individual varsity division results, Junior Zoey Tasseff was the champion in Creative Expression; Junior Grace Simpson took 3rd place in Dramatic Interpretation; Juniors Grace Simpson and Oliver Thedens were the champions in Duo Interpretation; Junior Oliver Thedens was the champion in Extemporaneous Reading; Junior Dominick Lund-May was the champion and Senior Andrew Haefner took 6th place in Extemporaneous Speaking; Senior Isaiah Lockwood took 3rd place in Great Speeches; Freshman Leon Yang took 2nd place and Sophomore Thomas Hamlet took 6th place in Humorous Interpretation; Senior Sydney Blomster took 2nd place in Informative Speaking; Sophomore Bel Lutterman was the champion and Senior Isaiah Lockwood took 2nd place in Original Oratory; and Sophomore Bel Lutterman took 5th place in Prose.

For individual novice division results, 8th grader Adriana Leiding took 3rd place in Discussion; 8th grader Hailey McConnell took 6th place in Poetry; Freshman Norah Heille took 2nd place in Prose; and 8th grader Michelle Esquivel took 2nd place in Storytelling.

Fairmont Speech competes next week at Shakopee High School and Martin County West High School on Saturday, March 2. The Fairmont Speech Team is coached by Kathleen Walker, Erik Walker and Miles Duffey.
