CEYLON -- The Ceylon City Council met Tuesday evening. In the public comments/questions time at the beginning of the meeting the Helping Hands of Ceylon non-profit group asked permission to erect a Holiday Tree on Main Street, a possible location was discussed and the council approved their request. They plan to light the tree on Nov. 25 at 6 p.m. Donations of new toys and money will be appreciated. They explained that they have drop boxes for toys and hats and mittens at Bomgaars, Tractor Supply Co., Sterling Drug and the Dollar Store in Fairmont. The group also reminded the council that they are planning a Santa Day on Dec. 16th. The Council approved having a Lighting Contest for residents for the holidays similar to what they had last year.
In other business:
-- The 2024 Budget will be finalized in December. It was 7.5 percent. The mayor remarked that they would like to keep the taxes and utility payments at a reasonable and manageable level but the city has bills to pay too.
-- The public meeting about the Broadband Project will be 6 p.m. Dec. 12 at city hall before the next meeting.
-- The Fire Association had a special meeting to iron out the payment to firemen and EMTs and when an EMT is also a fireman it is noted that there will be only one salary paid per call.
-- There was no more news about the owners of the buildings on Main Street that are scheduled for demolition. A letter was sent but no reply. There was also no progress about leasing/renting a mower.
-- Some of the junk violations of ordinances have been visited by the Sheriff's Department but no progress there.
-- The mayor remarked that the council needs to have some power to enforce ordinances and suggested hiring some people, perhaps part time. This will be discussed at the next meeting.
-- The coyote problem is also concerning in Ceylon, and was tabled until the next meeting.
The next meeting of the Ceylon City Council is 6 p.m. December 12 at city hall.
