Night proved ‘scary’ good for Fairmont

FAIRMONT-- Despite the cold day, children and families dressed in costumes for Halloween showed up to a variety of fun holiday events which took place around Fairmont on Tuesday.
Woodland Avenue saw a large number of trick-or-treaters come through as each year many of the homes along that street deck out their properties for the holiday with inflatables and many homeowners themselves dress up to pass out candy.
For the seventh year in a row, the Woodland Witches showed up for their annual dance. This year eight 'witches' danced in several different performances. Following their first performance the Fairmont High School Dance Team also danced for the many spectators who gathered.
Also set up on Woodland Avenue this year was 10-year-old Natalie Flaherty, who was dressed up as Anne Frank and handing out bracelets with a message to stop hate.
Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center and Ingelside Assisted Living both opened up their facilities to trick-or-treaters so residents wishing to participate could hand out candy and observe the different costumes.
On Downtown Plaza, many businesses stayed open past 5 p.m. to hand out candy. On the first block of Downtown Plaza, Imagine Martin held a photoshoot in front of the interactive mural.
Imagine Martin's chairman, Jeff Rouse, said that he noticed a lot of children stop to take pictures in front of the mural last Halloween so he thought this year they could hold a photoshoot.
He and Nancy Katzer, a member of the non-profit, decorated the mural and took photos of trick-or-treaters in front of it.
"It's been an annual tradition to trick-or-treat downtown, this added something to catch all of the cool costumes and those who were inspired to create art as a costume," Rouse said.
On West Interlaken Road, the fourth annual Haunted Garage, hosted by friends Oliver and Nola Thedens and Season and Elizabeth Kotewa, welcomed families for a free scare. The haunted garage was also open on Saturday night and saw 80 people come through.
The haunted garage has grown each year as the youth take a free will donation for it with the proceeds going toward more decorations for the next year.
Next Halloween will be the final hurrah for the haunted garage as two of the hosts will be going to college the following year. They plan to make next year's event the biggest yet.
