WELCOME -- The Welcome City Council met on Tuesday evening. The council discussed the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) information the mayor and others brought from an Aug.10 meeting. There is some money available for future EAB projects called the Shade Tree Program. The council will get forms filled out ASAP since the applications should be in by the middle of September and the second application by the end of September. The trees should be ball rooted and three inches thick. The town has many maple trees so that tree should probably be eliminated and there is a rule that lilacs and fruit trees are not included. There will be a need for people to help the City getting the grant. Some would help identify trees in the City that need watching or removal, although alot of trees have already been removed that were infected. If there are people that would be interested in volunteering to help with this project the city clerk at Welcome City Hall will be happy to take names and give information.
During public comment a resident asked about snow removal at the cemetery. They were assuming the perpetual care covered that. He asked what did perpetual care cover? There is a rodent problem at the cemetery also. The council answered that the City workers plow the main circle driveway and if needed, a side road to the burial plot only. They asked if the owner’s home insurance for personal property would cover damage to stones? If next of kin would be responsible?The City already trap or kill rodents in the cemetery. The Cemetery
committee is scheduled to attend the city council meeting on Sept.5.
In other news:
-- The council approved accepting with thanks memorials from Oliver "Tony" Trusesdell of over $1,000 to the Welcome Fire Department.
-- The City Works employee reported that the Chevy truck had 21 bids and will soon be sold for around $4,700. Also, the city works were reminded to remove the railroad ties at Keck Park that are heaving up and are unsafe.
-- Chief of Police, Trevor Yochim, reported that information about selling cannibus items was up to the city ordinances and the Fab Shop would have to apply to the City for a license. He suggested that a background check may be in order too.
-- The November meeting was shifted to 5 p.m. instead of 6 p.m. on Nov. 7 since it is election day and no business is allowed from 6-8 p.m. to give residents time to vote that day.
The next meeting of the Welcome City Council is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sept. 5 at Welcome City Hall.
