SHERBURN -- The Sherburn City Council met on Monday evening. Glen Coudron, the Planning Engineer from Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), reported on the proposed plan for the Highway 4 Project proposed for the spring of 2024. This would be construction through Sherburn and north to St. James. The plan for Sherburn was discussed and the resolution to approve the proposed plan was approved. MnDOT will advertise for contractors. Some of the problems in the plan were discussed such as sanitary sewer, water mains, street lighting and sidewalks from old 16 to I-90. The City will be responsible for some and MnDOT will be responsible for some. The plan is to prohibit motorized vehicles on that sidewalk.
Earlier the City asked about replacing the flashing school crossing light and MnDOT approved that project and will replace it with a solar-powered light. The light will activate when motion is detected. This will hopefully help the issue of pedestrians assuming it is a stop light and it is safe to cross when the button is pushed.
The meeting continued with the Administrator’s report. Leslie Heffle reported that there was only one bid so far to remove the emerald ash borer affected trees. There are 14 trees and some branches leftover that need to be removed. She reported that the City Attorney told her that the City may trim or remove trees in the boulevard if there is a safety issue. The council had asked her to investigate that problem. She also reported that the Economic Development Authority has been working on the housing need in Sherburn
which the council had asked about earlier. They have identified two or more lots which may be for sale. The tax abatement process is under investigation and also any grants that may be available. The Administrator asked for a work session about the budget and the council approved working after the next regular meeting on August 21.
In other news:
-- The handicap space in the rear of the Red Carpet is still being worked on.
-- The amount of water used at the truck wash was discussed and a possibility of asking for a larger amount of water for Sherburn to the DNR was discussed.
A softball tournament at the ball field in town was discussed with a fence for home runs needed.
-- A tree removal meeting on Aug. 10 in Windom will be attended by the mayor. He hopes to learn about grants and other issues due to the emerald ash borer affected trees problem.
-- The enforcement of ATV and golf cart traffic problems in Sherburn was discussed.
The next meeting of the Sherburn City Council is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Aug. 21 at Sherburn City Hall.
