Update on July 3 shooting

On Wednesday the Martin County Sheriff’s Office put out a press release regarding a shooting that took place on July 3 in rural Truman.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating this incident and working with multiple agencies throughout southern Minnesota. The victims have all been released from hospitals and a suspect has been identified as Lavant Marques Shaw, 18, of Owatonna. Shaw was taken into custody on Wednesday without incident. The arrest was executed safely due to the coordinated effort and assistance of the Owatonna Police Department, Steel County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota River Valley Drug Task Force, South Central Drug Investigations Unit and the Minnesota River Valley Tactical Team.

Details of the original incident that are known to investigators, are that there was a large gathering of people at a farm site in rural Martin County. The gathering was shared via social media. The gathering drew hundreds of people from the following areas: Owatonna, Waseca, Mankato, North Mankato, Albert Lea, Austin, Fairmont, Granada, St. Peter, Lewisville, Odin, Sherburn, Walters, Twin Lakes, Mapleton, Trimont, Blue Earth, Frost, Wells, Madelia, Isanti, Elmore, Winnebago, Eden Prairie, Eagle Lake, Huntley, Faribault, Worthington, Welcome and residents from the state of Iowa. Shots were fire into the crowd after an altercation and the suspect fled the scene. Numerous interviews were conducted, several search warrants have now been served and evidence has been collected.

Investigators are continuing to investigate and identify as many people as possible. The case continues to be under investigation and anyone with information is encouraged to call the Law Enforcement Center at 507-238-4481.
