Board hears of conference changes

SHERBURN-- The Martin County West School Board met Monday. Tom Elliot, the Athletic Director, gave a presentation to the board about some conference changes. The Tomahawk Conference and the Valley Conference may join in an alliance. Most sports have enough students to fill out the teams. The Track and Field Team may join the other conference and go to Sleepy Eye for meets. Both conferences are meeting next week to approve constitutions and places to meet for games. The Board gave him permission to begin adoption of a new conference with Tomahawk Conference. This will be discussed at the next meeting.

The questions for the November Ballot were discussed with a representative from ISG The Board did approve the question for the ballot to read approval of a 63 million two and a half section and two science labs pre-K to 12 building project, plus a 9 million project to build a new auditorium and an auxiliary gym. Superintendent Reynolds reported the amount that would be added to property tax using different scenarios like a $100,000 home and a $7,800 ag homestead and a $100,000 industry etc. Reynolds also reported that 97 percent of the 2022-2023 budget has been used so far.

In other news, the three summer school sessions were attended well and the teachers were very helpful. Community Education and Recreation will need a new summer ball coordinator next year. Let the school or Director Bowie know if you would consider the position or have a good suggestion. Park and Play, swimming lessons and gymnastics and summer ball are all going well.

In other action, the board:

-- Approved entering into an agreement for Cooperative Sponsorship for boys and girls Cross Country with Butterfield-Odin Schools for the 2023-2024 school year.

-- Approved the adoption of the new policies after the second reading. Then had the first reading of updated policies and approved the policy on updating the public data requests policy.

-- Approved the fee schedule for the next year 2023-2024 and approved keeping the board salaries as they have been this school year for next year. The school depository was approved as Bank Midwest and the school newspaper as the Martin County Star.

-- Approved some gym equipment as surplus and will sell it at auction. It approved the updates to the student handbook after some discussion about several items. The board also approved bids for milk- Prairie Farms; fuel for buses-Nuway KH; snow removal-Anderson Construction for Welcome and Tom Finke for Sherburn and Jon Holtz for Trimont.

-- Accepted a donation of $5,000 from the Martin County Youth Foundation for the Robotics Team.

The next meeting of the Martin County West School Board is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., August 21.
