SHERBURN -- The Sherburn City Council met Monday evening. A public hearing about the purchase of a fire truck with a USDA grant was held. There will be an application for the grant of $50,000. The truck to be replaced is an older truck (1986) and it was on the replacement schedule. According to the fire department, the truck is scheduled to arrive in November of 2024.
Travis Winter, an engineer with Bolton and Menk, gave a review of the Osborne Street project slated to be finished this summer. There is a big pile of dark dirt for the boulevards. The $3 million price is probably going to be less but $2.4 million has been paid so far. There are state grants and bond money of about $900,000. There was a
contingency fund established of about $80,000 for unseen matters that may come up. The bond money may be used for the concrete by the doors of the fire hall (about 360 square yards at $30,000) by Holtmeier as approved by the council. The Cargill, Temperance
Lake Road and fire hydrants may be done by bond money also. Street signs and asphalt and boulevards on Osborne Street need to be finished. The good weather last fall helped speed up the project more than was expected.
Winter also reported that MnDOT will replace the light poles near the intersection of Highway 4 and theSherburn streets if Sherburn will maintain them as part of the upcoming Hwy. 4 project slated for 2024.
The City Works employee reported that the Jetter truck is planned to be purchased from the other town as soon as they get their replacement delivered. It will cost $180,000 and Sherburn's share of that is to be about $ 74,000. According to the joint powers agreement, Dunnell pays 6 percent, Sherburn 40 percent and Welcome and Trimont each pay 27 percent. City Works employees will have a one-day training after the DOT inspection is done. The
City Works employee also reported on the waste treatment plant construction. The UV lights are up and running this may signal the end of using chlorination and then something to kill the chlorination effects. It should save many chemicals and add to the utilities fund when fully functional for the City. He also reviewed the water report about fluorination and the DNR report which is a monthly report. He mentioned that possibly no salt softeners could be in the future. He also reported that the truck wash odor problem was lowered but
they still have an oxygen problem and the truck wash is looking into an oxygen pump and is working with DODA manure handlers. They have felt they will be able to fix the problem. The City has asked that they do that ASAP.
In other business:
-- The council accepted the resignation of Jaime Leiting as manager of the liquor store.
-- The council discussed the request from the owner of the property at 204 South Main St. for demolition help from the EDA and City which would be $2,500 each. This was approved by the City with proper information.
-- The bid from M&R Paving for the patching of black top was approved. The sealcoating of several streets (Prairie, First, Cargill, and part of Swanson Drive) was discussed and a bid will be requested.
-- The Administrator's report, from Leslie Heffele, centered on the budget changes and review and of the budget and 4M Fund from January to March 2023.
-- Council reports asked about raising chickens within City limits. The Administrator will look into the ordinances and report at the next meeting.
The next scheduled meeting for the city council will be 5 p.m. on May 15, at Sherburn City Hall.
