Sherburn talks Hwy 4 project

SHERBURN — Sherburn City Council met Monday evening, one week later than usual because of the holiday last week.

An engineer from Bolten and Menk, Travis Winter, and Derek Behrens discussed the Highway 4 project. The lighting on Main Street should be underground and wooden poles should be replaced with six metal larger poles where possible. The poles have been hard to get lately so planning is important now. The plans for Hwy 4 project will be going in to MnDOT shortly for approval and then bids will be opened by MnDOT.

There are some water valves and old storm sewer and water pipes that need to be replaced before the Hwy 4 work starts, hopefully this year. There are assessment plans for the Osborne Street project underway for the future. The plan is to have it done in October or

November and sent to the county in November. The grant money for the Osborne project is being checked so that all the work is done and is satisfactory this year.

Moving to other matters, the city works employee reported on the wastewater plant progress and stated that there will be a construction meeting this week. He explained the order for RO membranes and installation will be about $60,000. They will be a better membrane with 440 gallons of water in a minute instead of 250 gallons. The health department talked about well head protection and a grant that may be available in 2025.

Reports from Chief of Police, Trevor Yochim, stated that the insurance also covers officers in their personal car which is necessary sometimes for travel to training or if necessary to use their car. The police helping Trimont is working well and the Trimont police are working on hiring a new officer soon.

The administrators report asked for a walk through to realistically see what is available for new businesses in Sherburn and work with sources to encourage new business. The fire contracts with the townships was discussed with a plan for a new truck in the next 10 years.

The council discussed the $15,000 for seal coating streets within the City and also discussed some streets scheduled in a rotation plan for sealcoating in a year or two. The recommendation is to sealcoat every five years and overlay every 10 years. Old Hwy 16 needs repair. The new street project should be done in a year or two.

In other news:

— The council discussed a CD for $73,000 which was maturing with Northland Securities and approved reinvesting it now with a maturing date of March of 2024. It also discussed a money market of $200,000 and decided to ask what minimum could be used to move to a CD if needed. That will be tabled for another meeting.

— The waste management contract was discussed and plans for Clean Up Day with tags purchased for a pile about as big as the box of a pickup. The City hopes to have Clean Up Day sometime in May.
