Welcome talks hog statue

WELCOME– The Welcome City Council met on Tuesday and heard about the Minnesota Department of Health inspection report from City employee, Max Longley, which he said was ”the best report for some years.” They look for manganese, radium, and others and there were no problems.

The ”Pig” to be displayed in Welcome was discussed and Councilman Eric Anderson reported that the design was to be the old buildings from the town. Some are still in the town and some are not. There was a design he showed the council with the depot, TV store,

grocery store, post office, hardware store, barber shop and more. It also had the watertower and flowers depicted. The council approved the design which was also approved by the County committee. There are about 15 different artists working on about 30 pigs. The committee hopes to have about 100 in the next few years. There is to be a celebration unveiling all the pigs and explanations of what is on each design later in May.

City employee, Max Longley, reported that the sealcoating bid was $18,000 more than last year. After discussion, the council approved doing repairs on side streets and any new improvements this year and next year doing more of that repair. Then doing sealcoating in

2024 and then they would be on the correct rotation of which sides of the town get sealcoating that their plan dictates. There is a plan to replace the hydrants on Second Street and by the Casey’s store.

A question about storage for the old fire truck was tabled and it will be discussed with the fire department. Discussion of the city attorney memo about litigation and about

outside employment for city employees was held in closed session.

In other news:

— The position of ballfield maintenance worker had an applicant and the council approved trying him for the summer. Rodney Werner is retired and wanted a summer job.

— There will be an ordinance violations drive around later in March. Clean-Up Day in town will be sometime in May. This is a good time to get those projects cleaned up so there are no citations needed.

The next meeting of the Welcome City Council is scheduled for 6 p.m. on April 5, at the Welcome City Hall.

Starting at $2.99/week.
