County keeps up bonding pursuit

FAIRMONT — Martin County Commissioners made a decision Tuesday to extend legislative representation services with law firm Larkin Hoffman. The firm has been representing the county’s bonding request for the proposed Martin County Public Safety and Justice Center in the Minnesota Legislature. The board authorized the extension for two additional months at the current fee of $3,000 per month. Robert Long of Larkin Hoffman gave the board a brief update.

“As you know the legislature did conclude their business in June in a special session,” he said. “The good news is that they got their budgets all approved at the last minute, but they did not take up a bonding bill as we thought they might.”

Long stated that the legislature will come back in September for a special session on a separate matter, and it was decided to slide the bonding bill back to that time frame.

Long stated that he has spoken directly to the Speaker of the House, Melissa Hortman, for about 15 minutes, and he believes there may be some small local projects included.

“The issue of a bonding bill is still very much alive in September. It will be a smaller bill, but we think it’s still wise to stay engaged. So we have reached out to Senator Rosen’s office and Representative Olson’s office to let them know that we are very much involved.”

Larkin stated that if the bonding bill does include smaller projects, Olson has stated that he would like to see some funds go to Martin County for the Justice Center. He also noted that both the House and the Senate will likely have people coming down to view the current jail.

In other action, the board:

— Approved a motion to accept an HVAC project submittal bid on $151,330 from Renaissance Roofing for the Court House roof project. This is a reduction of $211,135 from an original bid of $362,465.

— Approved a motion accepting a job description for the new position of Branch and Outreach Librarian for the Martin County Library system. The board also authorized recruitment for the position.

— Approved a motion accepting the resignation of Children’s/Young Adult librarian Amber Hughes from the Martin County Library, effective July 28. The board also authorized recruitment to fill the vacancy.

— Approved a motion accepting the resignation of Highway Maintenance Specialist Jeff Hall from the Martin County Highway Department, and authorized recruitment to fill the vacancy.
