County receives roof update

FAIRMONT — Martin County Commissioners heard from Bob Mickelson of ISG on Tuesday, who presented a bid for the Courthouse roof replacement project. One bid was received for the project, which included the replacement of two heating and cooling units. The bid came from Renaissance Roofing, Inc., in the amount of $1.8 million, with an alternate offered for change in insulation board and cricket materials for a 9.1 percent reduction, resulting in $1.6 million.

“We only received one bid, so we weren’t required to go through an interview process,” Mickelson said. He noted that the bid was over budget and commissioners ultimately chose to accept the bid while excluding the rooftop units.

Mickelson also gave an update on the courthouse dome.

“Right now we’re up at the base of the lantern,” he said. “Things are going good and I’m told it’s going to be toward the end of July when that’s completed up there. Right now they’re in probably one of the higher detail areas with that lantern.

“They started working on the eagles, and there’s 33 molds they created for the eagles and they have to stamp them four different times. Each stamping is probably four to five processes to heat the copper and stamp it because they can’t do that all at once. The eagles may come a little later because they take a lot of effort.”

In other action, the board:

— Approved hiring Carter Davis and Jordan Slater as part-time seasonal water patrol deputies.

— Approved hiring to fill a vacancy for Head Communications Officer at the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, due to the retirement of JoAnn Russenberger.

— Approved a Joint Powers Agreement between the Red Rock Rural Water System and Martin County, along with the counties of Brown, Cottonwood, Jackson, Lyon, Murray, Nobles, Redwood, and Watonwan. The agreement will help facilitate the Red Rock Rural Water System with the construction of a new Great Bend Water Treatment Plant.

— Approved a motion to allow for the highway Department shop and cold storage buildings to be pressure washed and painted, for an amount of $47,350. This includes $35,150 for the main shop and $12,200 for the cold storage building.
