BLUE EARTH -- The Faribault County Board of Commissioners, at their meeting on Tuesday, voted to enter into an agreement with Union Pacific Railroad and the Commissioner of Transportation, for the installation and maintenance of railroad crossing signals west of Frost.
The signals, complete with crossing arms, will be located at the intersection of County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 4 and 70th Street.
"The total cost of the project is $219,939," Public Works director Mark Daly said. "The anticipated federal aid is $197,945 so our obligation will be about $21,994."
Daly stated he did not know when the project would begin.
Daly also informed the board the gravel from the 2020 crushing was higher in quality than the last crushing, which was done in 2016.
"The cost in 2016 was $5.29 per ton compared to $4.30 per ton for what we crushed last year, Daly remarked. "So there was a savings of almost $1 per ton."
Moving on to other topics, discussion was also held on the approval of a two-year contract for Sentenced to Serve services with the State of Minnesota which calls for an cost increase of 6.6 percent over the life of the contract.
"I do not like the way this was presented," commissioner Bill Groskreutz commented. "It used to be a 50-50 split between the state and local governments. Then they changed the ratio so we pay 75 percent and now there is a price increase."
The board members voted to table any action on the proposed contract until their next meeting and asked for further explanations regarding the increase in costs of the contract. The new contract, if approved, would take effect on July 1.
The next meeting is scheduled for June 15 beginning at 4 p.m. with the Board of Appeal and Equalization meeting scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
