City ordinance requires mowing grass and weeds before they reach a height of 6 inches. Failure to comply will result in the city mowing and assessing the property owner for the cost. Also, mowing grass in the gutter or street is prohibited.
Need something new for your children to do, then think about joining 4-H. 4-H is a youth development program of the University of Minnesota Extension. Available for youth beginning in kindergarten, 4-H'ers participate in hands-on learning experiences in STEM, leadership and civic engagement, animal science, creative arts and much more. Through 4-H 's learn by doing process, youth obtain essential life skills such as problem solving, decision making, coping, and communicating that help them succeed in school, community, and career. Research shows that you who participate in 4-H have better grades and are more emotionally engaged with school, are more than twice as likely to be civically active and contribute to their communities. Twice a year in national cemeteries across the country, veterans are honored with ceremonies and visits. Memorial Day has long been the day to honor those who died in service to our country. We all live near a cemetery or two. Small cemeteries dot communities across the country, and many of them do not get the attention they deserve. Some are not tended well nor visited often. Investigate a local cemetery and identify the graves of veterans. The older the grave, the better, as there will not likely be family that visits. Not the names and dates of birth of those veterans. Take the graves of those veterans into your care. Visit each grave on Memorial Day and during the Christmas season, as well as the veteran's birthday. This project need not cost much. Check your local craft stores for small flags, perhaps 4 by 6 inches, on sticks. Take along a pair of clippers and trim around the headstone. Take the kids or grandkids along, if you wish, and teach them about honoring veterans. It is the right thing to do because it is more than a headstone.
