GHEC talks scholarships

GRANADA–The Granada-Huntley-East Chain School Board approved five action items and discussed the usage of its Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund. The action items included the approval of leftover senior class funds to be used for scholarships for the class of 2021 due to COVID-19 and some improvements to the school infrastructure.

The idea behind the scholarships for the class of 2021 started in 2020. Superintendent Doug Storbeck said that the seniors lost the ability to go on class trips or music trips that they’ve earned to go to through fundraising money. The state of Minnesota gave GHEC and other schools the flexibility to give the money that they had fundraised to them in the form of scholarships.

Currently, GHEC has $703,000 allocated to ESSER funds. The categories are divided into ESSER II and ESSER III. The school board has until Sept. 2023 and Sept. 2024 to use these funds. Options that were discussed to possibly use the ESSER funds included: adding a Director of Curriculum and Instruction for two years, transportation in the forms of possibly purchasing two Ford Transit Vans, one handicap accessible, and school facility improvement options focused on partly Agriculture expansion.

“I just wanted to get some initial blessings from the school board to explore some areas that I feel will improve our school, both academically and in the services that we can provide our students to meet their needs,” Storbeck said.

GHEC school board also approved rebuilding the intercom system and stone wall repair and maintenance to the north building. The intercom system rebuilding is estimated to cost $25,000. The stone wall repair and maintenance to the north building is estimated to be $130,000.

Other items approved and discussed at the GHEC school board meeting included:

— Approval of the letter Desire to Negotiate with the GHEC EA.

— Approved a long-term substitute contract for Emily Ibarra as a floating para/teacher for the 2021-2022 school year.

— Recognition of tenure for Chelsea Celander for three years.
