Komaragiri, Miller win Triple A award

FAIRMONT — Each school year, two seniors, one male, and one female, are selected from the senior class at area schools and given the honor of Triple A recipient. The award is given to students who excel in arts, athletics, and academics.

Ameya Komaragiri and Bryn Miller are this year’s Triple A winners at Fairmont High School. They were selected from 121 students in this year’s senior class.

“Every year this is a hard decision because there are typically three or four really good options and this year was no different,” said activities director, Mat Mahoney.

Komaragiri, son of Nirmala and Durga has been in soccer and tennis throughout high school.

He plays percussion in the band and viola in the orchestra. He’s also been in choir for several years. Komaragiri has been in speech since 7th grade and went to the state speech competition in 9th grade, where he did original oratory. He’s also participated in the school musical every year since 7th grade.

As for other activities, Komaragiri is in the math league and knowledge bowl. He’s also in mock trial and robotics.

He’s a member of the school’s National Honor Society and through that has volunteered as a tennis coach at summer youth camps as well as volunteered at Heaven’s Table Food Shelf.

Earlier this year, Komaragiri was named a Commended Student by the National Merit Scholarship program. Komaragiri was also selected to be on Fairmont’s homecoming court this year.

When it comes to academics, Komaragiri has been challenging himself for the last few years, taking mainly AP, honors, or college-level courses. Some of the classes he’s in includes honors chemistry, anatomy, Spanish, and film.

“There’s not really a subject I dislike, but I enjoy Spanish classes and science classes,” Komaragiri said.

As for the future, Komaragiri is undecided as to where he will attend. He’s applied to several in-state schools but is also looking at options outside of the state. His plan is to major in economics and possibly a minor in health care management.

Komaragiri was pleased to learn he had been named this year’s Triple A winner. He follows in his sister, Anagha’s footsteps. She was named Fairmont’s Triple A winner in 2016.

“It was pretty exciting. I’ve done a lot of things in high school and tested my abilities in a lot of areas so it was pretty cool to be recognized for that,” Komaragiri said.

Bryn Miller, daughter of Jeff and Tammy, has been active in volleyball and basketball throughout high school. She’s been captain of the basketball team for the last two years and was also volleyball captain this past season.

She’s also helped with CER basketball camps for young girls.

As for arts, Miller has played percussion in band throughout high school. She also played the quads in the marching band and went on the school’s band trip to California several years ago. She has also participated in the school’s musicals.

She’s maintained the highest honors throughout high school and is a member of the National Honor Society. Through that, she’s helped with the Kids Against Hunger concert and food pack. She’s also in the knowledge bowl.

Like Komaragiri, Miller is enrolled in many honors classes and college classes.

“I always liked math and science. I like chemistry and honestly don’t mind calculus right now either,” Miller said.

Outside of school, Miller works at The Ranch Family Restaurant.

She was also selected to be on the school’s homecoming court this year.

Miller is currently undecided as to where she will attend college.

“I’m not sure where I want to go but I plan to continue my education. I would like to enter the medical field,” Miller said.

Mahoney shared some praise for the two students.

“Bryn has a fantastic academic history as well as being involved in so many different activities at Fairmont. She has been a key member of the girls basketball team for multiple years and her leadership has not gone unnoticed.”

“Ameya is very similar in regards to his academic history and course work. Ameya really shines in the fine arts area, where he’s in orchestra and band. Ameya similar to Bryn is a very positive and well-liked student at Fairmont, that kids look up to,” Mahoney said.

Next, both students will fill out an application and turn that in along with a letter of recommendation to the MSHSL to see if they go on further to be named a Triple A sub-section winner.

Starting at $2.99/week.
