Martin County West students planning fall play

SHERBURN — Since positive COVID-19 cases have continued to rise in our county in September and October, Martin County West Schools have gone to distance learning for all grades, kindergarten through 12, as of this last Monday. This will continue to change, of course, in the weeks and months ahead.

The school will be closely monitoring the situation and will keep everyone informed as changes occur.

There is no distance learning today since it was a scheduled staff development day. There also will be no distance learning Thursday or Friday because of the MEA break.

Martin County West students in grades K-12 who would like to have a school lunch during distance learning will need to complete the lunch survey to indicate their desired pickup site. The link to the lunch survey is posted on the school district website.

There will be child care provided for school-aged children of Tier 1 essential workers. MCW paraprofessionals will staff the child care. Parents will need to complete the child care survey on the school website to check eligibility and indicate need. Child care will not be provided Oct. 14-16.

Sherburn Theatre will show the movie “Coco” this weekend at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday evenings, and 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

This movie is being sponsored by Hy-Vee in Fairmont.

There will be a movie the following weekend as well. It is “Nightmare Before Christmas,” and it is sponsored by Tony Weiss and Weiss Auto Repair.

Both movies are rated PG. Concessions will be available as usual.

The movies are free, thanks to the sponsorship, but donations to the theatre will be accepted and appreciated.

If any business, individual or organization in the area would like to sponsor a future weekend movie, contact Abby Shoen at (507) 230-3234 or Cheri Frank at (507) 848-6307.

Ruby’s Pantry will be in Sherburn from 5:30-7 p.m. Monday at the city park (weather permitting). If it is too cold, there will be a drive-through at the Regional Worship Center, across from Kum & Go. Items are placed in your trunk or in your pickup; you will not need to leave your vehicle. Cost is $20 for a large amount of food. There are no residency or income restrictions.

Martin County West drama department has announced it will have a fall play this year, although there will be changes from previous performances. (Change is something we have all become quite accustomed to).

They will begin auditioning and rehearsing for the play, which is a comedy, “The Phantom of the Soap Opera.”

They cannot have a live audience this year, so we cannot go see the play at the local theatre. The performance will be professionally recorded and streamed for viewing, and will be available in late November. Watch for updates.

Lutheran Women’s Missionary League of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sherburn will hold its October meeting at 2 p.m. today at the church.

Red Cross bloodmobile will be held 1-6 p.m. Nov. 9, at the Regional Worship Center in Sherburn. Appointments only, no walk-ins. Call (800) 733-2767, text BLOODAPP to 90999, or go online to www.redcrossblood.org

Regional Worship Center in Sherburn is hosting community breakfasts from 8-10 a.m. each Monday morning at the church, located at 2 Crossroads Drive in Sherburn. There is a free will donation for the meal, and all are welcome.
