Charge: Mankato man fled from state trooper

FAIRMONT — A Mankato man is facing a felony charge in Martin County.

Caden James Albrecht, 19, has been charged with fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle. The charge carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

According to the complaint:

At 4:28 p.m. Aug. 21, a Minnesota state trooper was patrolling on I-90 when he received a report of a white Cadillac passenger vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on the interstate.

Near mile post 97, the trooper observed the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. The trooper activated his front radar, which showed the vehicle was traveling at 105 mph in a zone with a posted speed limit of 70 mph.

As the vehicle passed, the trooper entered the median to stop the vehicle for speeding. The trooper observed the driver apply the brakes and slow. The trooper entered the westbound lane. The vehicle sped up and was overtaking other vehicles in the left lane.

The trooper activated his emergency lights and began catching up to the vehicle, which exited at the Welcome exit. While exiting, the trooper observed the vehicle stopped or driving slowly on the westbound ramp to get back onto the interstate. The trooper proceeded to the on-ramp and the suspect vehicle sped away at a high rate of speed.

About a half-mile later, the vehicle made an abrupt U-turn through the median into oncoming traffic. The trooper proceeded through the median and pulled out behind the suspect vehicle, which pulled to the shoulder of the roadway a short while later.

The trooper detained the driver, identified as Albrecht, and spoke with a male passenger. The passenger said they were on their way to look at a car in Iowa and they were running late.

The trooper spoke with Albrecht, who said, “I’m sorry.”

Albrecht was advised of his rights and agreed to make a statement. During the interview, he admitted he was trying to get away from the trooper.
