Martin County West ready for school

SHERBURN — School for Martin County West students in grades 7-12 will begin Tuesday, while students in grades K-6 will start Sept. 10.

Start and dismissal times are 8:20 a.m. and 3:06 p.m.

The school year will begin with in-person learning. Students and staff will be required to wear a face covering.

If you have any questions, call the school and ask for the school nurse, Mrs. Morgan, or the dean of students, Miss Smith.

The schools will limit visitors this year. Any parents or guardians picking up students will need to call the office when they arrive and the student will be escorted outside.

A “Transition Day” for Martin County West seventh-graders and any new students at the junior/senior high school will be held today. Martin County West staff, student council and National Honor Society will provide an orientation session from 3:30-7:30 p.m. for students and their parents.

This will be an opportunity for seventh-graders and new students, as well as parents, to get acquainted with the school and meet the staff.

Activities are planned to help the students be more prepared for the first day of school.

Parent-teacher conferences for Martin County West elementary students in K-6 grades will be held noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 9. If you have not been contacted about a conference, please call the elementary school your child will be attending.

Due to the Labor Day holiday, Sherburn City Council has changed its next meeting to 5 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall.

St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sherburn will continue to have one service throughout the month of September at 9 a.m. Sundays. It also will continue to have a service 6:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Monday evenings in September.

Regional Worship Center in Sherburn is continuing its community breakfasts each Monday morning from 8-10 a.m. at the church located at 2 Crossroads Drive in Sherburn. There is a free will donation for the meal, and they welcome everyone.

Martin County West Community Education and Recreation will hold a dog obedience class Wednesdays in September and October.

The basics of dog obedience training will be demonstrated at the class, which will be held 5:15-6:15 p.m. for six weeks beginning Sept. 23 at the Sherburn Elementary schoolyard. If raining, the class will be held in the school.

The instructor is Gary Hamman and the fee is $60.

Trainers must be at least 12 years of age, and dogs must be at least 3 months old.

The deadline to register for the class is Sept. 18. Please call (507) 764-2336.

Martin County West Early Childhood Family Education will host “Parents and Kids Time Together” for children and their parents. Children must be 2 years old through kindergarten before Sept. 1 in order to attend.

Parents will have the opportunity to meet as a group to discuss their concerns and share the joys of parenting while their children explore the playground.

This program will be held in our local parks. Social distancing will be practiced and masks must be worn.
