Maynard quits race for Fairmont City Council

FAIRMONT — The race for the at-large seat on the Fairmont City Council dropped to a two-way competition Wednesday when Jay Maynard filed an affidavit of withdrawal, ending his candidacy for the position.

The resulting race pits incumbent Tom Hawkins against challenger Michele Miller.

In a statement, Maynard wrote: “Today, I am withdrawing from the race for the city council at large position.

“It has become clear to me that my presence in the race would do nothing but split the vote of citizens who demand a change in the council. That would be the worst of all possible outcomes.

“For the good of the city of Fairmont, I ask that those of you who have supported me cast your vote for Michele Miller.”

Maynard further explained his reasons in a letter to the editor in today’s Sentinel.
