Primary election: Olson defeats Sukalski

FAIRMONT — Elmore Mayor Bjorn Olson captured a Republican primary win over opponent Michael Sukalski on Tuesday night.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Olson netted 58 percent of the vote to Sukalski’s 42 percent in the intra-party battle for the District 23A seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives.

Both men were seeking to replace state Rep. Bob Gunther, R-Fairmont, who is retiring after 25 years representing the area.

Olson had the party’s endorsement, but Sukalski, an engineer in Fairmont, challenged him based on a technical glitch at a May 19 “virtual” endorsing convention, at which Olson earned 59.8 percent of the vote, just shy of 60 percent standard. A computer program rounded up Olson’s total.

Gunther subsequently backed Olson, and other supporters argued that Olson would have gained the needed 60 percent anyway.

Tuesday night’s result settled the matter.

“Through the entirety of it, the most humbling experience in my life,” Olson said of the campaign. “You knock on a door and the person answers and they say, ‘Hey, Bjorn, it’s so nice to see you. I’m so happy that you’ve knocked on my door but don’t waste your time here. You’ve got our vote already. Go get another one.'”

Olson said he looks forward to that kind of support in coming months, and wants to live up to it.

“So many people are depending on us to serve and do what’s right, and we’re determined to do it,” he said.

Sukalski did not immediately return a phone message left with him Tuesday night.

Olson moves on to face Democrat Patricia Fahey Bacon in the November election. She faced no opposition Tuesday. Bacon previously attempted to win the seat — in 2014 — but lost to Gunther.

In other primary election news from Tuesday night in Minnesota:

According to the Associated Press, U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota survived a stiff Democratic primary challenge from a well-funded opponent who tried to make an issue of her national celebrity.

Omar, seeking her second term in November, defeated Antone Melton-Meaux, an attorney and mediator who raised millions in anti-Omar money.

Elsewhere, Democratic U.S. Sen. Tina Smith and Republican challenger Jason Lewis easily won their primaries in the only statewide races on the ballot.

In western Minnesota’s conservative 7th District, former state Sen. Michelle Fischbach won a three-way Republican race for the right to challenge Democratic U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson. Peterson, chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, is one of the GOP’s top targets to flip a House seat in November.
