FAIRMONT — The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has caused the cancellation of many area festivals this summer, but Fairmont will offer activities for the public on July 4.

The Fairmont Opera House will sponsor a block party beginning 10 a.m. Saturday on the first two blocks of Downtown Plaza. Thistle and Lace, a husband and wife acoustic duo, will perform from 10 a.m. to noon. Divas Through the Decades will hit the stage from 12:30-3 p.m. They provide a musical tribute to some of the most influential female vocalists in American pop music. The Becky Schlegel Duo will perform from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Its music is original, drawing on the influence of classic country, bluegrass and folk. Besides the entertainment, there will be a vendor show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and food trucks will be available throughout the event.

On Saturday night, the Fairmont fireworks display will begin at 10 p.m. A loud boom will precede the display every hour on the hour, starting at 7 p.m.

The fireworks are launched from the west bank of Lake Sisseton. The nearby walking/biking trail will be closed beginning the morning of the Fourth. Citizens are asked to stay off the trail for everyone’s safety.

Boaters are asked to keep wakes at a minimum beginning at 8:30 p.m. on the Fourth.
