Ceylon aims for city cleanup

CEYLON — Ceylon City Council this week discussed cleanup issues, noting some citations have been issued to property owners.

The council weighed going to court to enforce city ordinances. Officials say some residents have just moved their junk and claimed it was cleaned up. They say this is not fair to others who follow the rules.

Other ordinances about unlicensed dogs, building without permits and not following the building codes were discussed. Officials say residents must follow the process and get council approval.

Building permits can be purchased at City Hall. Ronnie Leiding is the inspector.

Residents also are asked to mow their grass toward the lawn, not into the street. The grass goes into the storm sewer, then to area lakes. The runoff creates algae in the lakes.

Turning to other business, the council heard a report from a city employee, who said there will be a special water tower cleaning next year and quotes will be used to work on a budget. The water tower will be cleaned this year on July 22.

In other action, the council:

o Approved an order for more gravel for some alleys and the shoulders of roads.

o Discussed the Community Day auction slated for July 25, which will be a real auction as opposed to an online event. Council members hope virus protection measures will be sufficient.

o Approved the request of Fred Schmidtke to block the street west of Legends II on Friday and Saturday.

o Discussed two properties where houses were demolished. Officials say the properties need to be cleaned up for safety reasons.

o Learned the city’s auditor will not make a personal visit to town, but any questions can be emailed to him.

o Learned a Federal Emergency Management Agency representative will be at the next council meeting.

Starting at $2.99/week.
