Sherburn resident has tax question

SHERBURN — A Sherburn resident asked the City Council this week if his taxes will be affected when he plants a wild flower/pollinator plot and a prairie grass plot.

Council members explained that the city tax will be the same unless the county changes his plot from agricultural to something else. They suggested the resident contact the county assessor about the matter.

Turning to another matter, the council heard from Sam Meixell of the Firefighter Retirement Association. He asked for an increase of $50 per year from the city for pensions. The council discussed the group’s financial report and approved the increase. Meixell believes the $50 hike could help with recruiting firefighters.

In other business, the council:

o Approved a donation of $100 to the Green Wing event.

o Learned that Bolton & Menk engineers will be working on the community hall repair proposal and a wastewater treatment project.

o Learned that auditors will be at City Hall on Tuesday. The clerk would appreciate residents not visiting during the audit, if possible.

o Learned the next meeting of the City Council will be 5 p.m. March 2 at City Hall.
