Welcome council sets fee for new ordinance

WELCOME — Welcome City Council this week approved a $100 fee for violation of the city’s new mailbox ordinance.

The council recently voted to no longer allow residents to have large, heavy bases for mail boxes, as they are considered a safety hazard during snow removal.

If a resident makes the city replace the pole and mail box, the price will be $100. Residents can replace these items on their own, as long as they meet code.

Turning to other business, the council rejected a request to give space in the back room of City Hall to Dollars for Scholars. The group rejected the fee proposed by the council. It also had requested storage for files in the room. The council was concerned about other groups wanting space and storage.

In another matter, Chris Borchardt gave a report for the Welcome Fire Department, and thanked the city for helping purchase the self-contained breathing apparatus items. The fire department received donations of more than $10,000 for the gear. It is finalizing plans for a USDA grant of $50,000. The department plans to get special radios for the masks.

In other business, the council:

o Discussed buying more trees but decided to wait until next year. The city will look into how many ash trees need to be removed and study tree prices. The city previously purchased 27 trees.

o Asked about the City Hall ramp being shoveled, and received assurance it will be shoveled promptly.

o Learned the next council meeting will be March 2.
