Fairmont man faces drug possession count

FAIRMONT — A Fairmont man is facing a felony charge in Martin County.

Jacob Charles McFarland, 20, has been charged with drug possession in the fifth degree, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

According to the complaint:

On Jan. 11, a Martin County Sheriff’s deputy observed a vehicle traveling west on 170th Street. The deputy observed the passenger side brake light was not functioning and proceeded to stop the vehicle.

The deputy approached the vehicle and, upon arriving at the passenger side window, observed an odor of fresh marijuana. The front passenger in the vehicle was McFarland.

Deputies later searched the vehicle. In the glove compartment, officers discovered a white crystal substance, a green leafy substance, a clear plastic bag containing a green leafy substance and a digital scale.

McFarland admitted the substance was “Molly,” which is the street name for MDMA, a Schedule I controlled substance.

McFarland was placed under arrest and transported to the Martin County jail. He was advised of his rights and admitted he had purchased the “Molly” discovered in the vehicle.

The MDMA was later weighed; it weighed 2 grams.
