FAIRMONT — Bomgaars opened its doors in Fairmont on Thursday, occupying the former Shopko site at 1001 Highway 15 South.

“Bomgaars has what you need when you need it,” said manager Mike Dehrkoop, referring to the company’s slogan.

Dehrkoop comes to Fairmont after spending 18 months getting the Blue Earth Bomgaars store up and running.

About 25 people are employed at the store in Fairmont, including 10 full-time workers.

The store features name-brand clothing such as Carhartt, Key and Wrangler, and Justin and Muck boots for the family, as well as lesser known brands at a lower cost.

The men’s clothing section, which offers jeans in sizes up to 56 and shirts in sizes up to 4XL, occupies a sizable portion of the store. There also are women’s and children’s sections.

Dehrkoop noted the variety of merchandise in the store, from the seasonal ice fishing gear and snowblowers, to a large section of pet supplies.

“We have gun safes. We have ammunition and targets, but we don’t have guns,” he said. “We have humidifiers and grills. Obviously, toys are big this time of year. We have farm gates and bird seed. There’s belts, hydraulic hoses and caster wheels. There’s a whole aisle of nuts and bolts. There’s furnace filters, air compressors and power tools.”

There is even a display of comfortable-looking Lane recliners, which Dehrkoop explained were not a standard part of the store’s inventory.

“They are for a special Black Friday promotion,” he said. “We’ve got a little bit of everything.”

Dehrkoop called Bomgaars a four-season store. While ice-melting salt and snow shovels are on prominent display now, that will change with the season.

“In the spring, we will have our nursery and greenhouse outside,” he said.

The Fairmont site marks the 92nd Bomgaars store for the company, which has outlets in Minnesota, Iowa, Colorado, Idaho, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. The corporate office and distribution center are located in Sioux City, Iowa, where the company began in 1952.

A grand opening in Fairmont is planned for Dec. 5-8. It will coincide with grand openings of two other new stores in Wyoming and one in Nebraska.
