Predatory offender facing felony charges

FAIRMONT — A Storden man is facing felony charges in Martin County.

Taylor Escobar Lopez, 24, has been charged with two counts of being a predatory offender and violating registration requirements. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

According to the complaint:

On Oct. 15, 2018, a corrections officer with the Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office booked Lopez into custody. During the booking process, Lopez was asked for his address and he said he was “currently homeless.”

Lopez said he received mail at a location in the 200 block of Sorenson Street in Storden, but admitted this was not his current address.

Lopez is required to register as a predatory offender under state law. Pursuant to the statute, he is required to advise his corrections agent or law enforcement when he is no longer living at his primary address.

The Fairmont Police Department obtained information showing that on March 27, 2017, Lopez registered his primary address as a residence in the 1500 block of Albion Avenue in Fairmont. There were no additional changes to his primary residence registration that Lopez made between March 27, 2017, and Oct. 15, 2018.

There is no record that Lopez advised any law enforcement authority in Martin County that he was no longer living at his registered primary address.

The Fairmont Police Department also discovered that the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension sent an Address Verification Form to Lopez on Jan. 29, 2018. By law, Lopez was required to complete and return this form within 10 days. Lopez failed to do so.

Lopez has since updated his registration information and is compliant with his registration requirements.
