Fairmont Area Schools activities total 47, sports 22

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont School Board on Tuesday approved the fine arts coaches/advisers for the 2019-20 school year.

There are 18 new high school activities or clubs this year, bringing the school’s total offerings to 47, in addition to 22 sports.

“There’s 47 available this year and there will be 48 next year because we’ll be doing an aviation club,” said Superintendent Joe Brown.

Board member Julie Laue asked about the 18 new activities.

Brown said some are new and some were led by volunteers last year. This year, those positions are being compensated, which is why they made the list.

Moving to other matters, Brown said enrollment is up at the district, with six new students, including three students in sixth grade, bringing the total to 1,690 in grades K-12.

Brown said the district recently began keeping track of the number of students who open enroll in or out of other area districts. It includes the number of students who attend area private schools.

“We’re going to keep that updated because it’s a nice trend to see what’s going on,” he said.

In other news, the board:

o Accepted a $6,161 donation from Fairmont 3M for office and classroom supplies at Fairmont Elementary School.

o Approved hiring Cory Hainy as the head softball coach for 2019-20.

o Approved holding the 2019 payable 2020 tax levy hearing at 6 p.m. Dec. 10 at City Hall.
