Bourbon, Brew and BBQ to help fund new amenity

FAIRMONT — The second annual Bourbon, Brew and BBQ is set for Saturday night at the Martin County Fairgrounds.

Proceeds from the event will go to the accessible Adventure Playground at Gomsrud Park. Hours are 6-10:30 p.m. in the rustic setting of the fairgrounds sheep barn.

The evening will include free, limited-edition glassware, food available all night, snacks and, of course, bourbon and beer tasting.

“Everybody gets a pint glass for brew and a shot glass for bourbon,” said Sara Pierce, Rotary member and chairman of the Adventure Playground committee. “All the glasses are designed by local artists. There will be a cash bar available, specialty bourbon cocktails and flights of bourbon for purchase. We have a new brewery this year, Take 16 from Luverne, and Lost Sanity Brewery of Madelia will be back.”

To assure that all those attending travel safely, members of MOSS (Many Offerings of Special Support) are providing sober rides home, and they also will deliver your vehicle to your home. This is a free service, but donations will be accepted.

Entertainment will be provided by James Miller and Blake and Co., and ATM services will be available for those needing funds for the silent auction or the purchase raffle tickets.

Among the silent auction items are three half hogs, a helmet signed by Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr, Gopher basketball tickets and Maverick hockey tickets. Raffle tickets at $5 each will be sold with the lucky winners selecting gift baskets valued at up to $100.

While last year’s debut Bourbon, Brew and BBQ, which drew 160, was sponsored by the Adventure Playground committee as a fundraiser for its project, the Fairmont Rotary Club has taken over the reins of sponsorship this year, but proceeds again will go to the playground.

“The plan is for Rotary to continue hold this event annually, picking different non-profits or causes to receive the proceeds,” Pierce said. “We have no idea who it will be next year, but there is always lots of great things going on so it shouldn’t be difficult to select a recipient.”

Proceeds from the event should provide the final funding needed for the playground.

“The cool thing about this is that Rotary held the first fundraiser for the playground, the Harlem Ambassadors, back in 2016, and this will be the final fundraiser. It’s a really great way for Rotary to bookend this because the club was instrumental in starting the fundraising,” Pierce said.

Advance tickets are $45, and tickets at the door are $50. Advance tickets are available at Pierce Accounting, Hy-Vee, Rotary Club members or Adventure Playground committee members who are listed at www.exploreadventureplayground.com. Those interested must be 21 to attend.
