Pair facing felony counts

FAIRMONT — A Truman man and woman are facing felony charges in Martin County.

Jason Lee Martin, 31, and Amber Lynn Sathoff, 35, have each been charged with possession of stolen property, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Both are also charged with possession of burglary tools, which carries a maximum penalty of three years and one day in prison and a $5,000 fine.

According to the complaint:

On Aug. 24, a Truman police officer was contacted by an officer of the Emmetsburg (Iowa) Police Department. The officer said his agency was investigating a burglary that occurred between 5 p.m. Aug. 23 and 7 a.m. Aug. 24 at the Go Gutters business in Emmetsburg. The officer said there were also several thefts from motor vehicles around this time.

The Emmetsburg officer said the business had surveillance cameras that showed a white female and male on the premises during this time. The officer said they were able to positively identify these individuals as Sathoff and Martin.

The officer said Sathoff and Martin had been observed on surveillance at the Wild Rose Casino before the burglary had occurred and that Sathoff had won a jackpot and used her driver’s license to claim it. Officers observed that the clothing and physical appearance of the individuals in the casino matched that of the individuals in the burglary footage.

The officer also indicated they observed a black, four-door vehicle leaving both the casino and the area of the burglary. The Truman officer was aware that Sathoff drove a black 2006 Chevrolet Impala, and that this vehicle was often parked at her residence in Truman. The officer also knew that both Sathoff and Martin lived at the residence.

The Emmetsburg officer said the burglars of the Emmetsburg business stole about $3,400 in cash, a laptop, a replica revolver BB pistol, Menards gift cards, and a GPS unit.

The Truman officer obtained a search warrant for the resident and officers made contact with both Sathoff and Martin at the residence.

During the search, the officer discovered a set of metal lock pick keys, which are commonly used to illegally enter through locked doors. Officers also discovered the described laptop and GPS unit, which were positively identified as those stolen from the business in Iowa.

A search of Sathoff’s and Martin’s vehicles revealed two sets of bolt cutters, several sets of gloves, a battery-powered drill, small pry bar, several vehicle lockout wedges and a black stocking cap with LED lights on the front. Also discovered were nine Menards rebate cards, valued at $709.65. With these cards, officers discovered a withdrawal slip that was identified as the slip that would have been with the missing cash.

In addition, officers discovered an orange Under Armour hooded sweatshirt that had been identified as having been stolen from a vehicle in Iowa.

Sathoff and Martin were placed under arrest and transported to the Martin County Jail, where they both admitted to being at the casino in Emmetsburg on the night of the burglary.
