State-to-county road transfer hits snag

BLUE EARTH — Faribault County Engineer Mark Daly says all of the work on highways 253 and 254 has been completed.

But there is an obstacle to overcome before the Faribault County Commission accepts the transfer of the roads from the state to the county.

“I am having problems with the description of the roads I received from the state,” Daly told commissioners Tuesday. “The description the state is using varies from the description we have been using for the last two years.”

The Interstate 90 exchange along Highway 254 is one place where there is a difference.

“My thoughts were it would go to the north side of I-90 but that is not what the state had in their description,” Daly said.

Part of the problem may be because the project has moved from the state aid department of the Minnesota Department of Transportation to the mapping department, according to Daly.

“I am sure they want to get this done because if the road is not transferred to the county by Nov. 1, then MnDOT will be responsible for maintaining the road through the winter,” he explained.

It takes a resolution passed by the county board to complete the transfer.

“I will not vote for a resolution to accept the transfer until MnDOT gets the description right,” said Commissioner Tom Warmka.
