Local woman faces drug-related felony

FAIRMONT — A Fairmont woman is facing a felony charge in Martin County.

Danika Joy Freeman, 28, has been charged with drug possession in the fifth degree, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

According to the complaint:

On July 20, a Fairmont police officer was on routine patrol when he observed a Dodge pickup truck registered to an individual known to the officer. The vehicle was parked outside a residence known to be associated with meth.

The officer ran the license plate and discovered that the registered owner had a limited license. Under a limited license, if the owner were operating the vehicle at that time, they would be in violation of that limited license.

The officer spoke with the individual’s probation agent, who indicated the individual had recently tested positive for meth. The agent requested the individual be brought in for a drug test.

The officer observed the truck leaving, driven by the registered owner. The officer initiated a traffic stop.

As the officer approached the vehicle, he observed the female passenger hand something to the driver. The passenger was later identified as Freeman. The officer spoke with the driver, who falsely indicated he was driving from Welcome and also denied he recently tested positive for drugs.

The officer later spoke with Freeman, who confirmed that she and the driver were coming from a residence in Fairmont.

The driver first consented to a search of the vehicle, but then indicated that maybe he did not want the officer to search it. The officer utilized his K-9 dog, which alerted on the passenger door and the wheel well area. The officer asked if there was anything there, and Freeman said she had a marijuana pipe in the right rear seat in a backpack.

The officer located the backpack and discovered a small amount of marijuana, along with a blue pipe, which tested positive for the presence of meth. Freeman admitted the pipe was hers.

Freeman was advised of her rights and agreed to speak with the officer. She again admitted the pipe was hers and to using meth. Freeman was placed under arrest and transported to the jail by another officer, where more meth was found on her person.
